Pop goes the neighborhood…

i realize this is already old news, but this DJ Earworm track of all the pop songs in the Top 20 from last year (all rolled into 1 mashup) just still blows my mind. i mean, we really have nowhere left to go with this craft anymore. i am constantly beating my head against a wall every day that i go into the studio to do the day job. if we really have run out of melodies and ideas to sing around a 4-chord popular structure, then i am thinking that something has to give. it’s not that Earworm (appropriately dubbed) didn’t concoct the most catchy, infectious mother load of a fucking pop song by piling every fucking one of them on top of each other.. it’s that it was ALL TOO EASY TO DO. this couldn’t have taken that long to do. it just took someone with the foresight and artistic mindset to hear all of these similarities going on at once. actually, that is the statement right there. it’s like OVERKILL. all these songs are going off in most people’s heads at once anyways, so maybe he just went ahead and did us all a favor and simplified things by giving us “song”. “do you like POP music? well, here is “song”. i hope it lasts and that you enjoy every minute of it. don’t get too tired of it by listening to it too much.”. this is genius and sad, all at the same time. i am very confused. as much as i like guilty pleasures, and the perfectly crafted pop song as much as the next asshole, i am conflicted on how i am supposed to feel nowadays. am i supposed to feel like it is exciting and wonderful? or that i have been HAD because it’s all recycled and lyrically getting more and more stupid? i AM part of the problem, because if i had a dollar for every time some jackass in a suit told me to make it sound like the radio, i would own that fucking airwave. but i don’t. and there’s a million dudes out there who can do that shit in their sleep better than i can. not because it’s challenging.. because it Payz, yo. and i gotta say.. i struggle with it daily. i think i am close to figuring it out, because i was close to burnout not long ago, and now things are getting interesting again. and there are still a FEW really good pop artists out there that can rise above the cliche´. but the more the economy gets put in the shitter, and the more the Country suffers, the more mindless drivel we want to ingest from the music community. that’s why we are fine with “putting our hands up in the air sometimes”… and just sayingheyyyyoand just letting go… we don’t wanna THINK about anything, and i kinda understand that. but when you are torn between wanting to make something real and make a living… well.. wear a helmet… cuz shit is gonna get crazy.
